Christmas is a time for family and presents, but it's also a time for giving thanks for what we have and if we can, for helping others. Each year since we started business in 1999, VetShopAustralia has made a donation to World Vision in the name of our staff and customers, as a way of showing our appreciation and also helping some of the poorest people in the planet.
By partnering with World Vision through the "Smiles" program, our donations are given by way of farm animals which help improve the life of the recipients, and not only does World Vision provide the animals but also training in animal welfare, so we know the recipients care for their animals well.
Years ago our donations started off as just a few chickens, but now we're proud to be able to donate a whole stable each year. Comprising two donkeys, two cows, two goats, four ducks, and six chickens with chicken feed these farm animals help to fight poverty on many levels and bring great joy to those who raise them and the stable is a lovely tie in to the traditional story of Christmas. For example, take a look at this video of Edward and his family:
We hope you all agree it's another great way that animals can bring joy and happiness in to people's lives.
Merry Christmas everyone.

The Christmas fun is about to begin and it is important for all pet owners to be aware of some common dangers that could put their pet in danger during festive celebrations. Follow these 5 safety tips from Dr Mark to make sure you and your pet enjoy the holiday season!
1. Turkey stuffing is not for pets
Turkey stuffing with onions and garlic contains the chemical thiosulphate. This chemical can cause your pet's red blood cells to weaken and rupture.
2. Keep turkey and ham bones away
Turkey and ham bones need to be kept far out of reach from all pets. These bones can splinter and lodge in an animal’s throat or intestine as well as cause severe constipation.
3. Keep your Christmas tree in a safe spot
Place your Christmas tree in a position that won’t be of risk to your pet. Make sure they are not able to knock it over or chew on any Christmas light cables. Christmas decorations can be a serious hazard for your pets’ wellbeing.
4. Alcohol is for humans only
Many people like a tipple during the festive season but remember that alcohol should be strictly kept in the hands of humans. Dogs and cats are much smaller than people, and so are much more susceptible to the poisonous effects of alcohol.
5. Gift wrapping is dangerous
Gift wrappings can be dangerous to your pet’s health. String and ribbon can cause obstruction of the small bowel if swallowed.
Merry Christmas to all our wonderful pets!
When 32-year-old Zhang Tiegang from Southern China was sick of going food shopping he decided to train his dog to get the job done for him. With a little practice it was only a matter of time before Deng Deng the one-year-old sheepdog was trained to go to the shop, pick out his food and carry it all the way home.
Deng Deng out on the job |
According to his owner, the clever pup loves the job and he now even has his very own custom made saddle to attach the shopping bags too. All he needs is some money and a list and he comes home with the food and change. Tiegang is yet to explain how Deng Deng communicates what he wants with the shopkeeper, and his lack of opposable thumbs surely makes it tough to handle money, but it sounds like a decent arrangement for both parties.

Cats can go pink too! |
What you might not know, is that your pet too can be part of this important campaign, with products like the Pink Cat Bowl.
Pink Ribbon Day goes to the Dogs |
Pink Ribbon Day is a great day for you and your pets to get out there and show your support for those who are currently fighting breast cancer and those who have survived this terrible ordeal.
Something that we have become aware of recently is that unfortunately some traders do try and cash in on the Pink Ribbon campaign, giving only a very small percentage (some times only a few cents) to official Cancer charities, that's why this year we recommend you only purchase your pink ribbon products from official outlets such as the Official National Breast Cancer Foundation store.

Swimming 5 miles in Shark infested waters and surviving 4 months on a remote island is the type of adventure that only the toughest could possibly survive. A family pet astonishingly put all odds to shame and did just that after being thrown overboard from her family’s sailboat in rough seas off the coast of Australia in 2009.
The tragic event had her owners searching high and low for their beloved pet and eventually the search was called off as Sophie was presumed drowned. Little did anyone know that this cattle dog had the strength and determination of a true survivor and managed to dog-paddle her way to the remote island of St. Bees, Great Barrier Reef. The 5 mile swim in shark infested waters proved that Sophie was in serious survival mode and was determined to make it home safe and sound.
The amazing canine then began island living and survived four months living on a diet of wild baby goats before she was eventually spotted by island rangers who were shocked to see the sight of a wild dog. The rangers captured Sophie and after word spread fast of this amazing survival story the cattle dog was eventually led back to the arms of her owners!
It didn’t take long for Sophie to settle back into normal life once again and leave her days in the wild behind her.

A recent poll undertaken by VetShopAustralia.com.au has revealed that pet approval is the newest criterion to make the unwritten list of dating rules.
This result was recently discovered by asking pet owners whether they would date someone their pet didn’t like. Respondents indicated that their pet’s approval of the potential boyfriend/girlfriend must be given before they will date them.
Australia-wide results of the poll showed that 82% of respondents answered that they would definitely not date someone their pet didn’t like, only 3% said that it wouldn’t bother them, 10% would only if the date looked like George Clooney, and 3% only if the date looked like Angelina Jolie.
USA poll results also showed this to be a global trend as 75% of respondents answered definitely not, 15% said it wouldn’t bother them, 5% answered only if he looked like George Clooney and 5% if she looked like Angelina Jolie.
Dr. Mark Perissinotto, head vet at VetShopAustralia.com.au believes that because pets have now become accepted as family members and even replacement children, their opinion is valued greater when making decisions such as whom they should date.
“Pets are very loyal and loving, which is why owners trust their opinion just as they would one of a good friend,” Dr. Perissinotto said. “They are also a good judge of character, which is why the majority of pet owners said they wouldn’t date someone their pet didn’t like.”
Dr Perissinotto suggested that some ways to make a good first impression when meeting your date’s pet include letting the pet approach you first, staying confident to avoid the pet sensing any anxiety, bringing treats along and crouching down at eye level upon first meeting.
“Impressing a date is no longer just about roses, chocolates and candlelit dinners; it’s seems getting the bark of approval from a certain furry friend might now be the secret to scoring yourself a second date,” Dr Perissinotto said.
Boo is a five-year-old Pomeranian that believe it or not currently has a higher number of fans than most celebrities. He shot to fame after his personal Facebook page reached a fan base of 1.79 million fans!
When you take a look at Boo it is easy to see why he has the whole world talking. His fluffy bear like face cannot be overlooked and even famous celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian have admitted to being weak at the knees after their Boo encounter.

Boo promoting his new book |
Boo received his unique look after a grooming session gone wrong, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The groomer believed that his hair had become so knotted that shaving him was really the only option. Boo's owner was horrified, yet quickly changed her mind after seeing how cute the haircut actually looked.
Boo has now released his own book which is titled 'Boo, the life of the world's cutest dog' and spends his days busily promoting the exclusive biography. The book is a collection of exclusive photographs of Boo doing all his favourite things and with his unforgettable puppy dog eyes the book is no doubt set to be a top seller!

Move over Flipper, The real life story of Winter the bottle nose dolphin is set to hit the big screen in a new hollywood blockbuster film titled Dolphin Tale. The film is played by and based on the true story of Winter who is widely known for having a prosthetic tail.
Winter showing off her new tail |
Winter tragically lost her tail at the young age of 3 months after she became caught in a crab trap. The rope cut off the blood supply to her tail which saw the little dolphin begin the fight for her life as she ended up in a seriously critical condition.
Lucky for Winter she was spotted by a small fishing boat that was able to bring her to the Clearwater Aquarium in Florida. The SeaWorld team nursed young winter back to health and it was believed that Winter would now have to beat the odds and learn to swim without a tail.
A Prosthetics specialist heard about the tragic loss that this special dolphin was facing and volunteered to make Winter her very own prosthetic tail. She is know a worldwide inspiration to children and adults with medical conditions and disabilities which make her the perfect role model to become a true hollywood star!

In the case of ticks, prevention is essentially the best cure; and here are 5 important tips to help prevent your pet from becoming a victim to ticks this season.
1. Perform daily checks on your pet for ticks
Remember to be systematic and use your fingertips to feel through your pet’s fur to ensure you find any ticks. Start at the nose and work your way backwards thoroughly, be sure to also check areas such as between the toes, behind ears, under the armpits, and around the head and tail.

2. Use a tick preventative product on your pet
Some recommended products for tick prevention include either Frontline Spray, Frontline Plus or Advantix applied every 2 weeks, as well as a Preventic or Kiltix collar to help you keep your pets safe. It is important to keep on top of dosages and as these products are not guaranteed to be effective in every situation it is important to use these products in conjunction with other preventative methods.

3. Avoid known tick habitats such as long grass and bush areas
Ticks mostly live in moist and humid environments, near wooded or grassy areas, therefore during outdoor activities with your pet be sure to always walk in the centre of trails and be wary of walking through leaf litter or shrubs. Also create a tick free zone in your yard by keeping lawns and shrubs short and removing any compost material.

4. Watch your pet closely for any changes in appetite or behaviour that could be result of a tick
If you notice either a change in your pet’s behaviour, including being distressed, anxious, or confused, or a change in their appetite, these could be signals that your pet has a tick and it is recommended that you check your pet for ticks immediately.

The 1st of August is very special day in the life of a thoroughbred horse in the Southern hemisphere, as it’s their birthday! Horses in the Southern hemisphere all celebrate their birthdays on August 1, whereas horses in the Northern hemisphere all celebrate their birthday on January 1. This collective birthday coincides with the racing seasons and allows the standardisation of their age when entering in races, due to the lack of records of actual birthdays.
On a horses first birthday in August they are considered a yearling, and are counted to be one year old, however they may have been born several months earlier. This year the party will be getting started at the National Sports Museum as they plan to throw a birthday party for renowned racehorse Subzero, to help celebrate his and all the other horses special day!
The winners of our 2011 Kong Dental Competition have now been selected! Congratulations to our five winners Janelle Dowton, Amanda Robinson, Paul, Carly and Neal Salan. You have all won your pet a Kong Dental Prize Pack each including a Kong Stuff A Ball and a Kong Stuff 'N Paste.
Thank you to everyone who entered the competition, we had so many great entries. Keep watching our VetShopAustralia.com.au Facebook page for more chances to win some great prizes.
Gamera enjoying life with a wheel |
Slow and steady wins the race certainly doesn’t apply to Gamera the 12 year old African tortoise who believe it or not has just acquired a wheel as a leg replacement. Gamera tragically had his leg amputated after suffering a life threatening leg injury only a short time ago.
Vets thought it might mean the African tortoise was to continue life as a three legged tortoise becoming even slower and steadier than the usual tortoise.
However Gameras luck soon turned after the doctors at Washington State University's veterinary hospital came up with the idea to stick a wheel using epoxy adhesive to his shell under his right shoulder where his leg once stood.
The idea was a huge success and Gamera apparently took to his new leg right away. Since then Gamera is said to be healthier and happier than ever and he would no doubt give any Hare a run for their money that was game enough to take him on!

Nancy and her fellow workmate |
Move over Border Collies there is a new sheep herding pooch in town! Nancy the Chihuahua has been making headlines around the world since it was discovered the tiny dog has an incredible hidden talent of rounding up sheep more than six times her size.
Don't let her tiny frame and cute face fool you, Nancy has been giving the local working dogs a serious run for their money, proving to all that size in fact certainly doesn’t matter.
Nancy was originally a rescue dog that suffered from severe sarcoptic mange before being brought back to health and adopted by none other than a London sheep dog trainer. Nancy took a liking to being a spectator on the farms watching closely as her border collie friends went to work.
This inspired her owner to let Nancy have a turn and to her disbelief it turned out the clever Chihuahua had been paying more attention to the sheep herders than expected! She left farmers speechless as she went to work rounding the sheep as if she had done it her whole life.
The best part is that Nancy has drawn attention and brought a positive image to all rescue dogs that are still in need of a home showing the world that they are capable of anything if given a chance!Don't let her tiny frame and cute face fool you, Nancy has been giving the local working dogs a serious run for their money, proving to all that size in fact certainly doesn’t matter.
