A nice little Christmas present in the email today - We've just been notfied that VetShopAustralia has just been given the 2010 Dad's Choice Best Website Award - in giving the award, the judges cited VetShopAustralia's "low priced pet supplies and its easy to use navigation, [which] makes taking care of the family dog or cat just that little bit easier"
They also go on to say that "Dr Mark and his team are a delight to deal with by phone or email, and they are always willing to do that little bit extra."
Thank you Dad's Choice, and most of all thank you to our great staff who make it possible for us to win these sorts of awards.

Frontline Spray Good Enough Even for White Lions

There is something about your kids taking an interest in what you do for a living that makes you want to burst with pride.
This morning the kids were watching a doco on White Lions on the Animal Planet Channel. Excitedly they race in and grab me, "Look dad, the vets are spraying the white lions with Frontline Spray to keep fleas away", my son says. "You should put it on the VetShop blog, dad" says my daughter. "How's "Frontline Spray Good Enough Even for White Lions" as a headline?" she asks.
And so, being the proud dad I am, that's today's headline.
Sure enough, the zoo vets were spraying their white lions with the distinctive Frontline Plus white and blue spray bottles, and frankly, that's not surprising. Frontline is a very good way of controlling fleas on cats, and big cats are no different. The size of lions and other big cats makes Frontline Plus spot on treatment not really an option, so, just like lots of very large dog owners, the zoo vets use the spray form of Frontline to control fleas, carefully ensuring that they use the appropriate dosage for animals the size of lions.
It just goes to show, you really do learn so much from your kids :)

Survey Results - How Much Are You Spending on Your Pets This Christmas?
- December 09, 2010
- By VetShopAustralia.com.au

It appears from our Christmas survey that Aussie pets are lapping up the benefits of increased consumer confidence this Christmas as owners spend more on their pets.
Nearly 400 Australian pet owners responded to our survey which shows that 29% of respondents planned to spend between $26 and $50 on the family pet this Christmas, compared to 26% in 2009.
Around 10% plan to spend up to $10; 22% will fork out between $11 and $20 on thier dogs and cats and 21% will pay between $21 and $25.
There are also some generous pet lovers planning to spend between $51 and $100 on their pet this festive season who account for 15% of the group (up 2% on last year) while 1% of respondents say they will splurge more than $100 on their pets!
Fewer furry friends are missing out all together this Christmas as well, with only 1% of owners surveyed saying they will buy their pet nothing compared to 2% in 2009.
Dr Mark Perissinotto, head vet at VetShopAustralia.com.au says that its interesting to see that despite the all that we are hearing about economic “doom and gloom”, owners were not crossing their animals off the Christmas gift list.
If anything, Australians are spending more on the family pet than ever. Interestingly, the biggest increases have occurred in the $26 to $100 range and virtually every owner surveyed will purchase some kind of treat for their animal.
For many people their cat or dog is very much a part of the family so we think it’s only natural that they should want to share the joys of Christmas gift giving with them.
Dr Mark suggests that its a good idea to buy presents that will improve the quality of life of both the animal and the owner, such as a new collar and leash to encourage more exercise, a tooth cleaning kit or if you want to also do something positive for the community as a whole, consider a donation in your pet's name to your local animal shelter.

Each year the VetShop Team selects a certain number of charities to support during the year. This year we have again chosen World Vision as our Christmas Charity.
Through the World Vision Smiles program, we've donated an entire stable with two donkeys, two cows, two goats, four ducks, and six chickens with chicken feed to a community in Zambia. To reflect our appreciation of the most important people to our business, we made the donation in the name of our staff and our customers.
Like in previous years, we've chosen a gift of farm animals as they help to fight poverty on so many levels. Our gift goes towards agriculture and environment work to help communities grow food for families and restore and improve their environments and combines our love of animals with our desire to help the most needy. We know that World Vision place a huge emphasis on animal husbandry so we know the animals we've donated, as well as helping the community, will also be properly cared for.
For more information on how our donation in your name helps underprivileged communities, visit www.WorldVision.com.au

The end of November has finally arrived which can only mean one thing - it’s time for all the moustaches to be shaved! The guys in the office are nearly ready to once again return to their former clean-shaven, handsome faces. So we would like to invite you all to take one last look at the final product from our Movember challenge:
Dr Mark |
Joe |
Steven |
They have certainly done their part for the Movember charity by raising over $1,000 that will go straight towards helping to gain awareness for men’s health, particularly for prostate cancer and depression.
The guys would like to say a big thank you to all those who donated and supported them along the way. Also, a little bet involving a carton of beer has been running in the office as to which of the three was able to grow the best moustache.
Leave a comment below and let us know who your favourite candidate is to ensure they win the carton of beer!

I got this idea from my friend "Chopper" |
Fund raising has started slowly, but we now have some runs on the board (and a lot more hair on our faces)!
"Call Me Tom Seleck" |
Men sporting Movember moustaches, known as Mo Bros, become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.
Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts. The rules are simple; register online at Movember.com and start the month of Movember clean shaven, before growing a Mo.
More Mo' is More Mo' |
Funds raised are committed to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Beyondblue: the national depression initiative and the Movember Foundation.
Together, the three channels work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world class programs in the fields of research, education, support, and awareness.
Of course there is always more that can be done, so if you would like to make a donation:

Last week we took a look at the New Bayer Animal Health Commercial for its dog products, and this week, we'd like to share the new TVC for Bayer's Cat health products.
This funny ad promotes Advantage and Advocate for Cats and we liked the humour it used.
(note, Advantix, which is in the Advantage family for dog products must not be used on cats).

A friend of mine just sent me this great youtube dog video, showing Jesse The Jack Russell doing chores around that house!
It's amazing - a dog that makes the bed, takes of your shoes and so much more - now that's a clever dog! Maybe I should get Jesse's owner around to try and teach my kids a few of these tricks :)

I can think of nothing better than an early morning ride on a beautiful sandy beach.
Friends of mine, Rebecca and Jess took their horses for an early morning workout on the beach recently.
BC and Sporty loved it. I wonder if they were thinking how great it is to be alive and so full of energy. Rebecca is riding BC while Jess is riding Sporty. Sporty has the star on his forehead. The horses are in excellent condition.
We, in Australia are very fortunate to have so many excellent beaches.
Whilst not all beaches allow horses on them, there are some designated beaches that permit this.
We also have beaches that allow dogs on them.
It is obvious that they get great enjoyment from running along the sand and splashing in the water.

Every Australian Does His Duty |
Regular readers will remember our article last Anzac Day which included a picture of Aussie troops with a Kangaroo in front of the Egyptian Pyramids during WWI.
We'll we just stumbled across a fantastic old movie clip showing Australian troops and their kangaroo or wallaby mascot on Salisbury Plain in the United Kingdom during World War One also.
The clip, which runs for about 80 seconds is entitled "Australia Will Be There!" and shows King George V reviewing Australian troops on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, England in 1916.
The clip starts with a shot of the King's group (about 15) riding on horseback; with the King's flag flying. It then pans to Australians; standing in long line with an officer in front saluting and a small kangaroo stands in front of the row.
It then continues with a better quality shot of King George & others, cuts to Australian troops marching by to right and more shots of the kangaroo mascot.
You can see the entire clip here.
Don't forget. If you have any photos or video of Aussie animals serving with our armed forces either here or overseas, we'd love to see them!
Regular readers will now that we are big supporters of Steve Irwin and his charities.
Steve Irwin Day is coming up on the 15th of November. The day is an international and annual event to celebrate the extraordinary life of the one and only Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. The day reprsents the many things Steve was passionate about: FAMILY, WILDLIFE CONSERVATION, FUN and KHAKI
This year they are calling for help to raise valuable funds for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and they are asking you to KHAKI IT!
Khaki is more than just a colour. It's an attitude. It's a stand to do something positive in our world and a passion to make a difference. And when you make a difference - you KHAKI IT!
If you wish to help fundraise this Steve Irwin Day you can building your own fundraising page or by making a donation to the Australia Zoo Joey Ambassadors.
There are some great fundraising prizes up for grabs so why not make a start and help to raise funds for the patients at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

New Website Feature: Free Reminder System

Have you ever forgotten to apply your pet's monthly flea or tick treatments? If so then you are not alone. We hear about this happening all the time, and although it is often our busy lifestyles that are to blame, it is our pets that we put at risk.
That is why here at VetShopAustralia we have created a free re-application reminder system on our website so you never have to miss another application date again.
When you place an order with VetShopAustralia you will be given the option to receive a monthly reminder message to remind you to re-apply your pet's medication. Many of our customers have found this to be an invaluable tool in helping to maintain a consistent application schedule for their pets as it ensures that an application is never missed.
To sign up for a monthly reminder, you can either follow the prompt after making your order, or alternatively, you can go into "My Account" and click on "Manage Reminders". From here you will have the option to specify how you will receive your reminder (either by email, SMS, or both) and on what day each month.
We proudly provide the VetShopAustralia reminder system free of charge to our customers.
If you need any further help in using the reminder system please send us an email at info@vetshopaustralia.com.au.
At VetShopAustralia.com.au we love all sorts of dogs, clever dogs, old dogs, young dogs, dumb dogs, but it is always great to see a well trained dog showing off his or her stuff. Take a look at the well trained fellow in the latest Drontal Allwormer for Dogs ad!

You might have read recent media reports quoting our own Dr Mark about how some dog breeds are smarter than others. Topping the list of smart dog breeds was the Border Collie,
with the Poodle at number two, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Shetland Sheepdog, Labrador, Papillon, Rottweiler and Australian Cattle Dog.
At the other end of the scale, (in no particular order) came what I guess you can call the "not as clever" breeds, including the Shih Tzu, Basset Hound, Mastiff, Pekingese, Irish Setter, Borzoi, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bulldog, Basenji and Afghan hound.
An update to our blog article in October last year on the cost of pet ownership: Bankwest released research earlier this year showing that it costs an average of $25,000 to care for a dog over its lifetime! That's almost $2,500 per year!
Cats are, as you would expect, a bit cheaper with average costs of around $1,700 a year.
The research revealed that the biggest expense of dog ownership is pet food and treats at about $1,200, followed by veterinary costs oat $450 and additional care such as grooming and walking of $400.
What wasn't a surprise to any of us here was that the Bankwest research revealed that pet owners think the cost of a pet dog is a small price to pay in return for what a dog provides its family.

This month we have been running with the theme of cooking for your pets and we have had many people email us wanting to tell us about the different meals that they like to make. This gave us the idea to start a section on our website just for pet recipes so our customers can share their different recipes with each other and to get ideas to create new dishes.
So now we would like to invite you all to send in your favourite pet recipes to us at info@vetshopaustralia.com.au, and we will have Dr Mark check them over for their nutritional value as a meal for pets and then put them up on our site. Also, if you have any photos of the prepared meal to go along with the recipe then we would love to see them too!
Here are a two recipes to get you started.

Dr Mark from VetShopAustralia.com.au has recently been featured in the media for his story about the benefits of cooking for your pets. Below is an excerpt from an article featured on Ninemsn:
Whether or not it has anything to do with a certain hit TV show is debatable but more and more Australians are becoming "His Master's Chef" and cooking not only for their families, but also for their dogs.
Cooks who see their pets as a member of their family are dishing up noodles for poodles, rissoles for rotties and (German) shepherd's pie.
According to Dr Mark Perissinotto, chief vet with vetshopaustralia.com.au, a growing number of dog owners are turning their noses up at manufactured pet food in favour of home-cooked meals for their four-legged friends.
"For a lot of people, a good quality commercial quality pet food is a good idea, however many people are transferring a lot of humanisation on their pets which are becoming a real part of the family," he said.
"As pet owners we're finding that when we cook for ourselves we can also cook for our pets as well.
"The beauty of cooking for our pets is we know what they're getting and there are diets which are easily available that are balanced and can provide all the proper nutrients and requirements they need.
"People want to know their pets are getting more than just ground up leftovers like animal hoofs and offal from the abattoir in their pet food."
Dr Perissinotto said it could also make the household budget go further.
The vet's advice is to cook for your pet with the same care as you would for a toddler, remembering dog palates are not nearly as sophisticated as human ones.
"A little bit of seasoning with salt is fine but there are things which are strictly off-limits like cooked onions, raisins, macadamia nuts, chocolate, avocado, alcohol those sort of things," he said.
"In the wild a wolf is not just carnivorous, they'll eat everything they kill from the gut contents to the bones, even the hair and the hide so you do have to include things like bones which are also very good for keeping their teeth clean, in their diet.
"Wolves also eat insects, dig up wild vegetables and chew on grass, and a lot of dogs love things like raw apple and raw carrot shredded into their meals."
If you have any favourite recipes that you cook for your pets we would love to see them! Just send them to info@vetshopaustralia.com.au.

Watching MasterChef on Sunday night with our two dogs, got me thinking.
"I wonder just how many people out there cook meals or treats for their pets?"
Every now and then my wife does bake up a batch of home cooked doggy biscuits, and I wonder just how many other people do too.
Please take a minute to answer the survey on the right hand side of this page, and we'll publish the results next month. It will be interesting to see just how many pet lovers out there are cooking treats for their dogs, cats and other pets .
If you've got a pet treat recipe you would like to share, why not email it in?

We've all been really excited about seeing Dr Mark on television recently! We've always known that Dr Mark has a way of explaining pet care concepts to kids, and that's been supported by the fact that he has recently been picked up by kids TV Show Totally Wild (Channel 10) to film a number of segments on pet care for boys and girls.
A couple of months ago he did a segement on "Pampered Pooches" and just how too much spoiling your puppy can lead our canine friends to picking up some bad habits. Check out the episode here:
Last week he filmed another segment for kids about First Aid for Pets. As soon as it goes to air, we'll let everyone know!

My wife and I heard the following fantastic poem by Rudyard Kipling on ABC radio the other morning. We had never heard it before but we wanted to share it as I am sure it will strike a cord with any dog owner/lover. It's called "The Power of the Dog"
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Rudyard Kipling

Earlier this week I had a great time shooting another slot for the Australian kids TV Show Totally Wild (Channel 10 8:00AM Week days). I really enjoy working with the Totally Wild team as I always find them to be a truely friendly, professional team who clearly love animals.
The host of the segment was Sean who did a fantastic job, but the real star was a beautiful black lab called Nero.
The episode we filmed today was on Pet First Aid and it was a great chance to remind kids (and mums and dads) of a few simple does and don’ts when it comes to first aid for dogs and cats.
Some simple things include:
For more useful pet first aid tips, make sure you catch the episode on Totally Wild. The segment will go to air later in the year, and we’ll be sure to let everyone know as soon as we have the date.

- Have a pet first aid kit and pet first aid manual on hand at home
- Keep dogs and cats away from power leads and household poisons
- Some cats love the clothes drier so beware
- Pets and traffic don’t mix – proper fences save lives
- Never leave pets in hot cars

When we start to feel the cold we put on extra layers - we wear jumpers and socks, and if it's really cold, we put on gloves and a beanie. We also make sure that our kids are warm and cover them up with extra layers of clothes - but what do we do for our pets?
Many pets are just not suited to the cooler weather and like us, will be a lot more comfortable in a warm winter coat that can protect them from the elements.

We all know the old proverb about teaching old dogs new tricks, but what about teaching marsupials new tricks that might save thier life? One study recently published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology certainly suggests it's possible.
The Study by University of Sydney accademics, Professor Rick Shine, Stephanie O'Donnell and Dr Jonathan Webb working in conunction with the Territory Wildlife Park tested whether quolls could be taught to avoid eating cane toads through a process called "conditioned taste aversion" (CTA).
Cane toads are highly toxic when eaten and have driven the northern quoll to extinction in many parts of northern Australia.
The main problem for predators like the quoll is that they eat large toads, which usually kill the quolls rather than merely making them feel nauseous. Consequently, most predators do not learn to avoid toads as food.
The research used a group of 62 young quolls and taught half to associate eating a cane toad with feeling sick.
A few days before the quolls were reintroduced to the wild, members of the treated group were fed a small dead cane toad laced with nausea-inducing thiabendazole. The cane toad, which weighed less than 2 grams, was not large enough to kill the quoll but the chemical made them feel sick.
Dr Webb and his colleagues found that CTA made the quolls less likely to attack the toad in the plastic container and once released into the wild, the toad-smart quolls survived up to five times longer than "toad-naive" quolls.
According to the researchers, the next challenge is to see if it is possible can scale up the results to really make a difference to wild populations of endangered predators like quolls, goannas and bluetongue lizards.

Last month, we took a look at few things you can do around your yard to help your dogs battle boredom.
This month we take a look at some of the best food based boredom busters.
Kongs and similar hollow rubber dog toys are great. These keep your dog entertained as she tries to get at the treat inside. Some great foods to use in Kongs and other hollow dog toys include cheese, canned dog or cat food, peanut butter, a little Vegemite (for Aussies) or liverwurst, leftovers, dried liver and commercial dog treats.
You can simply hand your dog his stuffed treat as you leave home, but a better way is to hide the stuffed object somewhere in the garden.
A cheap and simple alternative is to half fill a plastic PET bottle with kibble, pasta or water and allow your dog to toss it around. Leave the top off and the treats will spill out slowly. (Note, some dogs may need supervision with a PET bottle if they are likely to swallow the plastic, so try this one while you are home to supervise a couple of times first).
Another home made dog entertainment device is to tear a rag in to long strips, and roll a little treat into each strip and tie it in knots. Make the bundle as tight as possible and give it to your dog to explore and dissect.
Kongs and other stuffed toys, or simple ice-cream or yogurt containers can be filled with diluted beef stock and frozen. Add a special treat in the centre, and watch your dog lick away trying to reach the treat. These are especially good for those hot summer days.
And now, as promised in our last entry - the No 1, Most Important, Fool Proof, 100% Guaranteed, Never Fail, Dog Boredom Buster! Its simple, its free and its YOU!
That's right, don't forget that the one thing your dog wants most is to spend time with you. Get out in the backyard or your local dog friendly park, and run, play, thow balls or a frisbee and generally get physical - your dog will love it, and so will you!
