Christmas is a time for family and presents, but it's also a time for giving thanks for what we have and if we can, for helping others. Each year since we started business in 1999, VetShopAustralia has made a donation to World Vision in the name of our staff and customers, as a way of showing our appreciation and also helping some of the poorest people in the planet.
By partnering with World Vision through the "Smiles" program, our donations are given by way of farm animals which help improve the life of the recipients, and not only does World Vision provide the animals but also training in animal welfare, so we know the recipients care for their animals well.
Years ago our donations started off as just a few chickens, but now we're proud to be able to donate a whole stable each year. Comprising two donkeys, two cows, two goats, four ducks, and six chickens with chicken feed these farm animals help to fight poverty on many levels and bring great joy to those who raise them and the stable is a lovely tie in to the traditional story of Christmas. For example, take a look at this video of Edward and his family:
We hope you all agree it's another great way that animals can bring joy and happiness in to people's lives.
Merry Christmas everyone.

The Christmas fun is about to begin and it is important for all pet owners to be aware of some common dangers that could put their pet in danger during festive celebrations. Follow these 5 safety tips from Dr Mark to make sure you and your pet enjoy the holiday season!
1. Turkey stuffing is not for pets
Turkey stuffing with onions and garlic contains the chemical thiosulphate. This chemical can cause your pet's red blood cells to weaken and rupture.
2. Keep turkey and ham bones away
Turkey and ham bones need to be kept far out of reach from all pets. These bones can splinter and lodge in an animal’s throat or intestine as well as cause severe constipation.
3. Keep your Christmas tree in a safe spot
Place your Christmas tree in a position that won’t be of risk to your pet. Make sure they are not able to knock it over or chew on any Christmas light cables. Christmas decorations can be a serious hazard for your pets’ wellbeing.
4. Alcohol is for humans only
Many people like a tipple during the festive season but remember that alcohol should be strictly kept in the hands of humans. Dogs and cats are much smaller than people, and so are much more susceptible to the poisonous effects of alcohol.
5. Gift wrapping is dangerous
Gift wrappings can be dangerous to your pet’s health. String and ribbon can cause obstruction of the small bowel if swallowed.
Merry Christmas to all our wonderful pets!
