We've all been really excited about seeing Dr Mark on television recently! We've always known that Dr Mark has a way of explaining pet care concepts to kids, and that's been supported by the fact that he has recently been picked up by kids TV Show Totally Wild (Channel 10) to film a number of segments on pet care for boys and girls.
A couple of months ago he did a segement on "Pampered Pooches" and just how too much spoiling your puppy can lead our canine friends to picking up some bad habits. Check out the episode here:
Last week he filmed another segment for kids about First Aid for Pets. As soon as it goes to air, we'll let everyone know!

My wife and I heard the following fantastic poem by Rudyard Kipling on ABC radio the other morning. We had never heard it before but we wanted to share it as I am sure it will strike a cord with any dog owner/lover. It's called "The Power of the Dog"
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Rudyard Kipling

Earlier this week I had a great time shooting another slot for the Australian kids TV Show Totally Wild (Channel 10 8:00AM Week days). I really enjoy working with the Totally Wild team as I always find them to be a truely friendly, professional team who clearly love animals.
The host of the segment was Sean who did a fantastic job, but the real star was a beautiful black lab called Nero.
The episode we filmed today was on Pet First Aid and it was a great chance to remind kids (and mums and dads) of a few simple does and don’ts when it comes to first aid for dogs and cats.
Some simple things include:
For more useful pet first aid tips, make sure you catch the episode on Totally Wild. The segment will go to air later in the year, and we’ll be sure to let everyone know as soon as we have the date.

Some simple things include:
- Have a pet first aid kit and pet first aid manual on hand at home
- Keep dogs and cats away from power leads and household poisons
- Some cats love the clothes drier so beware
- Pets and traffic don’t mix – proper fences save lives
- Never leave pets in hot cars

When we start to feel the cold we put on extra layers - we wear jumpers and socks, and if it's really cold, we put on gloves and a beanie. We also make sure that our kids are warm and cover them up with extra layers of clothes - but what do we do for our pets?
Many pets are just not suited to the cooler weather and like us, will be a lot more comfortable in a warm winter coat that can protect them from the elements.
